custom mapping for variables

For example, when mapping an import you select first name for the first name column, then company name for the company name column. Can I add a custom option to map the spreadsheets to so that the variables will not get duplicated? Because when I add job titles I have to import them as custom variables, and if the column title is uppercase is one sheet and lowercase it makes them two seperate variables
